1. RENTAL REQUIREMENTS

You must be at least 25 years old. Drivers aged 21–24 can rent with a $10/day surcharge. You'll need a valid physical driver's license, passport, and a credit card in the driver's name with sufficient available balance for the deposit.

Yes. Drivers between 21 and 24 years old can rent with a young driver surcharge of $10 per day. We recommend consulting with your On Route Rental agent when booking.

Yes. The credit card must be in the main driver's name and have sufficient balance for the deposit. We do not accept debit cards or cash for the deposit.

The rental payment can be made with a debit card or cash at select branches. Deposits are strictly via credit card only.

2. RESERVATIONS & MODIFICATIONS

You can book directly with our agents via WhatsApp, phone, or email. We guide you through every step to find the ideal vehicle for your trip.

No. Reservations can be modified or canceled with prior notice at absolutely no cost. Our agents can guide you through the process.

On Route Rental will coordinate to keep your reservation active as long as possible. Please notify us as soon as you know about the delay so we can reschedule without issues.

Yes! One-way drop-off is available at all network locations. Hotel pickup within 15 km of any branch is completely free.

3. AIRPORT PICKUP

At SJO (San José) or LIR (Liberia), find the Alamo counter after clearing customs. They'll handle the registration process and shuttle you to the nearby branch to pick up your vehicle.

4. VEHICLES, ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT

Through the Alamo network we offer: economy, compact, midsize, SUVs, pickups, luxury vehicles, and vans. Tell us your trip purpose and passenger count, and we'll recommend the best option.

Yes! Available accessories include: SIM card, child seat, booster seat, GPS, and portable WiFi. These have an additional daily cost and are subject to availability.

The vehicle category is guaranteed (economy, SUV, etc.), not the specific model. If an adjustment is needed, you'll always be offered an equivalent or superior category.

Yes. All rentals include unlimited mileage. Driving outside authorized border zones is strictly prohibited.

5. PAYMENTS, DEPOSITS & COVERAGE

A hold is placed on your credit card. The amount depends on your coverage plan. It's released within 7 business days after incident-free return. Your bank may take longer — our agents can help you follow up.

None without prior notice. Our quotes include all fees upfront. At booking, we give you a clear breakdown of the total.

Tolls are the driver's responsibility and must be paid directly at toll booths. Vehicles do not include an electronic toll device unless otherwise indicated at pick-up.

6. FUEL

The vehicle is delivered with a full tank and must be returned the same way. If returned with less fuel, a refueling charge applies (fuel cost plus a service fee).

Yes! At pickup you can purchase a pre-fuel option (half tank or full tank) at a convenient rate. This lets you return the vehicle without worrying about the gas level.

7. INCIDENTS, FINES & ACCIDENTS

Stay calm. Call 911 and request a traffic officer. Then contact On Route Rental or the network's roadside assistance line. Do not move or abandon the vehicle, and don't sign any documents without consulting our agents first.

The driver is 100% responsible for any traffic fines during the rental period. If the fine arrives after return, the renter will be contacted for payment, plus a 10% administrative fee.

It depends on your card's policy. We recommend checking with your credit card issuer before renting. If you choose this route, your card will assume the full cost of damages — you'll then file a claim directly with your card's insurance. On Route Rental can also guide you on available coverage options when booking so you travel with peace of mind.

Damage coverage limits or eliminates your financial liability in case of damage or theft of the vehicle. The exact conditions vary by plan. We explain each option in detail so you can choose the one that best fits your trip.

8. GENERAL POLICIES

Yes! Additional drivers are completely free. They just need to present themselves at the counter with a valid license and official ID. Without registration, they're not authorized to drive.

Yes, as long as the interior is kept clean. If the vehicle is returned with excessive dirt or upholstery damage from pets, a cleaning surcharge will apply.

No. All network vehicles are 100% smoke-free. Cigarettes, pipes, e-cigarettes, or similar are prohibited. Returning a vehicle with smoke odor will incur a cleaning charge.

Normal travel dirt is expected. However, if the vehicle is returned with excessive soiling (mud, severe stains, accumulated dust), a cleaning charge proportional to the condition may apply.

9. LOCAL DRIVERS — NATIONAL LICENSE

National drivers may rent any vehicle class with basic insurance only during the first 3 rentals. From the third rental onward, they will have access to full coverage.

Depending on the vehicle category, a Visa Infinite, Mastercard Black, or AMEX equivalent is required. For luxury rentals, two credit cards are needed: one of the aforementioned and one basic card. The additional driver must meet the same requirements as the primary driver.
